En este bunkai:

I am well acquainted with the concept of learning by principle over technique, having spent a large proportion of my life doing it. The issue here is what "grandmaster" Annesi is teaching as self-defence. conceptually what he is doing works in the dojo against nice and slow "karate" style attacks from a compliant Uke. This is completely divorced from the reality at 0300hrs outside a pub in Redhill on a Saturday night. Don't waste your time - there are many better "pragmatic" karateka out there.

Typical literalist. What you're trying to learn is not a technique against a specific attack, you will never get anywhere that way. Its a concept for you to work on later. The karate punch is just a reference point for any number of attacks that could potentially come your way. In other words, this is not self defense but concept learning. You take the 'lesson' from the kata/bunkai etc then apply it in a more realistic way. Unfortunately most don't get passed the theoretical understanding.
